The National Music Centre is proud to present Alberta Spotlight: nêhiyawak with opener FOONYAP LIVE from Studio Bell on Thursday, April 19 at 8 pm MST.
Hailing from amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton) on Treaty 6 territory, nêhiyawak tells stories—their story—capturing time through honeyed vocals and a cacophony of electronic and analog sounds. Balancing their Indigenous heritage with the present, the band blends indie-rock guitar and dance floor synths alongside steady beats of carved cedar log and hand drums. Within the framework of the conventional song, the band creates and adds their own history while sharing with their audiences a unique expression of Indigeneity in Canada today.
Born in Calgary, FOONYAP started violin when she was 4. Embedded in classical music, Catholicism and Chinese culture, FOONYAP struggled with conformity, alongside a need for acceptance. Creating a hauntingly beautiful blend of folk and electronic, her latest album reflects her tumultuous journey to self-discovery.
