The National Music Centre (NMC) is pleased to launch NMC ON—a music conference series sponsored by ATB Financial. NMC ON is a new flagship brand for National Music Centre that includes a series of conference-style multi-day summits, exploring a diversity of topics in music, the music industry, and music’s evolving place in our world. The inaugural NMC: ON event will take place as part of the annual Alberta Electronic Music Conference (AEMCON) from November 13-17, and will focus on exciting trends that are occurring in today’s global electronic music movement.

“After the success of TONTO Week with AEMCON in 2018, we wanted to find a way to recreate that magic more often by building upon the success of the conference, and expanding the frequency of the event into other topics on music,” said Andrew Mosker, President and CEO, NMC. “Our long-term vision for NMC ON is to create a series of annual music conference-style summits that attract thought-leaders in music to Calgary from across Canada and around the world.”

“ATB Financial has supported the National Music Centre since its stunning home in Calgary was just a bold dream, and we’re excited to see our partnership evolve with the centre’s new music conference series,” said Curtis Stange, President and CEO of ATB Financial. “Whether it’s helping musicians and other creative entrepreneurs by reimagining banking to meet their needs or sponsoring and volunteering with numerous festivals, cultural institutions and programming, ATB proudly supports the National Music Centre’s vision of Alberta as a hub for music, culture, and artistic expression.”

AEMCON, an annual multi-day conference and festival that draws over 3,000 electronic music professionals and fans to venues across Calgary every November, will incorporate NMC ON as a major piece of the conference’s offerings. “We’re so excited to be working closely with NMC again this year to showcase these incredible artists,” said Isis Graham, co-founder of AEMCON.  “The NMC ON speakers and artists will really highlight the role technology and innovation has played in shaping electronic music history.”

This year, AEMCON will showcase over 125 of the world’s leading music producers, DJs, labels, and industry professionals for a week of learning, sharing, and musical showcases at venues throughout the city, centered around Studio Bell. NMC ON headliners for 2019 include synth pioneer and Buchla master Suzanne Ciani, Mellotron guru Markus Resch, Vancouver EDM tastemaker Nick Middleton (of The Funk Hunters and Westwood Recordings), and more.

Dubbed the “Diva of the Diode,” Suzanne Ciani is an electronic sound designer and composer known for her decades-long relationship with, and mastery of, the Buchla 200e synthesizer and its predecessor, the Buchla 200. In addition to her pioneering work as an electronic musician, her new age releases have earned her a handful of Grammy nominations. Ciani will be in attendance to deliver a demonstration and lecture on the history of the instrument.

Markus Resch is the co-owner and contemporary creator of Mellotron, the iconic polyphonic tape replay keyboard famously used by the Beatles, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, and many others. Resch will offer a workshop with the instrument and delve into Mellotron’s origins. Resch’s appearance will help launch the John Leimseider Technician in Residence program, named in honour of NMC’s late electronics technician who passed away in 2018. This new program will give technicians  from around the world the opportunity to explore and expand their expertise, while contributing to the care and maintenance of NMC’s historic instrument collection. More details about this program will be released later this fall.

Vancouver EDM tastemaker Nick Middleton is a sought-after music producer, internationally-acclaimed touring DJ, artist manager, and label owner. One half of the electronic music act, The Funk Hunters, and CEO and Founder of Westwood Recordings, Middleton’s career is built on a deep love of electronic music and entrepreneurship. As the next Artist in Residence, Middleton will spend five days at Studio Bell collecting sounds from NMC’s collection to be used on his next album. He will also offer a talk and workshop during NMC ON and will perform at Studio Bell After Hours. More talent for Studio Bell After Hours will be announced soon.
