A recipient of NMC’s OHSOTO’KINO Recording Bursary, Joel Wood discusses the power of the drum and shares some of his teachings with David McLeod, Chair of NMC’s National Indigenous Programming Advisory Committee.
Hailing from Maskwacis, Alberta in Treaty 6 Territory, Wood is a Plains Cree, JUNO Award-nominated traditional powwow and round dance artist. In 2022, he received studio time to record a commercial album at Studio Bell. That time resulted in his newly released album, titled Mikwanak Kamôsakinat, which is now available on all streaming platforms. Click here to listen.
With support from TD, National Music Centre (NMC) is creating more opportunities for Indigenous artists through the OHSOTO’KINO initiative. OHSOTO’KINO is an Indigenous programming initiative focusing on three elements: creation of new music in NMC’s recording studios, artist development through a music incubator program, and exhibitions via the annually updated Speak Up! gallery.
