NMC Artist in Residence Presented by Partake Brewing: Tess Roby

Tess Roby, a genre-blending artist, musician, and producer, shares the story behind her creative journey and the launch of her record label, SSURROUNDSS, which she founded to “create the space I couldn’t find for myself.”

As the first-ever NMC Artist in Residence, presented by Partake Brewing, Roby used the opportunity to push the boundaries of her sound and experiment with new tools and techniques. A brand-new non-alcoholic beer from Partake Brewing, Sonic Intuition, was also unveiled inspired by her creative hustle.

Roby’s five-day residency at Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, was spent crafting her third album. She used a range of wild and unique instruments, including the iconic and highly sophisticated Waldorf Wave synthesizer, whose sounds can be heard on the music of Depeche Mode and scores by Hans Zimmer.

National Music Centre’s self-directed Artist in Residence program is designed to nurture artistry and innovation by providing musicians with the tools, time and space, and the use of NMC’s one-of-a-kind collection and expertise to create new works in a world-class facility.
