How’d You Get That Awesome Gig, Mike Clark?!

Name: Mike Clark

Occupation: Musician/Owner Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery.

First Job: I was in high school and got a job with Coca Cola. We drove around to events in and around Vancouver with an R2-D2 robot (from Star Wars) dressed up as a Coke can. I got fired because I dropped its head and broke it.

Best Job: Being a musician and owning a live music venue.

Greatest Professional Challenge: Learning how to be a musician and a live music venue owner.  Steep learning curve for the latter.

So how did you get this awesome gig anyways? I was teaching school for the last 20 years or so and playing gigs too. I felt it was time for a bit of a change so I decided to try my hand at running a music club, and at the time there seemed like a real need in Calgary for one. I had a pretty good following at the jam I was doing a Morgan’s Pub and thought it would transfer pretty well at my own place. It did! We have live music seven nights a week now, happy hour on Fridays and my jam on Saturdays.

What do you like best about what you do? I get to play music at my own place with people I like to play music with. Also, I get to listen to some of the finest live music in Canada everyday!

Any special skills required? You have to be a little bit NUTS!

Favourite experience on the job: Too many to pick just one, but one of the most memorable was closing out the Calgary Folk Fest playing with Ian Tyson as everyone sang “Four Stong Winds” together. I got chills!

Advice for people who want your awesome gig: Go out and do what you love! Remember you are what you say you are.

Favourite Canadian music venue: Um…Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery!

Favourite record at the moment: Bocephus King’s Willie Dixon God Damn! Amazing songs and production!
