MTT@NMC: Sled, Stampede and Folk Fest!

Hey folks,

How are things? Hope you've been having a great summer so far….things have been busier than ever ever since Sled Island started up about a month ago. I caught a couple great sets at NMC during Sled from PLEIADES & No You Hang UP! We also got to play around on some of the instruments with Brandon Smith, tour guide extraordinaire.

We were all busy during Stampede, but were able to shoot a special session that we'll be bringing to you on this blog very soon. Keep your eyes peeled! Here's my MTT co-founder Benson Simbirski trying out the Sonica battery-operated synth during that session.

This week the Calgary Folk Fest kicked off with shows & workshops at the NMC. The 7th Annual Bootcamp is a program that the Folk Fest offers each year, allowing aspiring musicians to participate in musical workshops with festival artists. I took part in a 2007 songwriting workshop with PF Sloan that was an invaluable experience for me as a musician, and can't recommend these workshops enough – something to consider for next year!

This year Sam Baker, Mark Berube & Jon Langford offered songwriting classes; Luke Doucet & Donna Grantis offered guitar workshops and Shakura S'Aida headed up Presenting Your Voice 101 at the NMC. All these wrapped up with a mini-showcase concert yesterday afternoon, and with this, kicked off this years Calgary Folk Fest! See you on the island!!
