New Music Reviews: Head of the Herd – ‘By This Time Tomorrow’

Last week, Vancouver based Head of the Herd—comprised of Neu Mannas (lead vocals/guitar) and Clayton Frank (vocals/guitar)—released their sophomore album produced by Finger Eleven’s Rick Jackett and James Black, and the much sought after Garth “GGGarth” Richardson. The album titled after their debut single “By This Time Tomorrow” shows off their bluesy hard-hitting style accompanied by the sultry voice of Mother Mother’s Jasmin Parkin.

Neu says about the album on the band website: “We took those emotional, personal songs, and injected the wild vigour that our live show is renowned for.” This is demonstrated by the mix of heavy and commanding tracks like “You Come, You Go” and “Elizabeth”, to the more despairing and vulnerable song “Breathe Me Baby”. This album—as well as their debut LP On The House—focuses on the art of storytelling through music, as themes of love lost, guns, and cigarettes are accompanied by bluesy guitar riffs and “whiskey-infused” vocals.

“Breathe Me Baby” tells the story of a steadfast love to a discontented women whose “father was a preacher” and “mother was a whore,” who ends her relationship and life with his twelve-gauge. The softer instrumentals and the addition of female vocals give this track a grieving and tragic feel.

This self proclaimed “modern blues band with a hell of an edge” has crafted a great album from start to finish, with their debut single hitting #1 on the Mediabase Charts the week of July 1 and was featured during the 2013 NHL playoffs. With their increasing momentum and their recent tour with Guns n’ Roses, Head of the Herd should be a band on your radar.

By This Time Tomorrow is available for purchase on iTunes. Or better yet, check them out live in Calgary with Glorious Sons on Thursday November 28 at Republik.
