NMC at the 100th Calgary Stampede!

The National Music Centre is thrilled to participate in this year’s 100th annual Calgary Stampede! We have been busy every single day with all the different ways we’re amplifying the love, sharing and understanding of music.

On the interactive side of things, we have a booth featuring the Great Canadian Music Challenge, brought here by a partnership between the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS)/JUNO Awards and the National Music Centre. This state of the art touch-screen trivia game system tests your knowledge on Canadian Music History, the JUNO awards, and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame – plus it’s SUPER FUN!

The format is a three player head-to-head round of five questions and the faster you answer, the more points you get. There are some tough questions in there but the game is nicely balanced with some easier ones and a few questions that really surprised me! Come check it out for yourself – we’re just under the grandstands at the Bell Centennial Plaza stage. While you're there, you can also try your hand on one of our Theremins! Could this little girl be the world's next Theremin virtuoso?

Over in the BMO Centre at the Western Oasis (the coolest, most serene place in the Stampede), we’re very happy to showcase some amazing objects from the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame as a part of our celebration of 100 years of Canadian country music. There are some pretty amazing pieces there, including Anne Murray’s acoustic guitar, Hank Snow’s beautiful embroidered suit, a gorgeous bass that belonged to Gary Buck, Michelle Wright’s lovely suit jacket and much more! Take a break from the heat and crowds for a moment to duck into the Western Oasis and check out these treasures on display.

Last but not least, we are proud to present some great talent as a part of our Jazz Summit Series. A number of local festivals are all programming acts for the Bell Centennial Stage throughout the Stampede, including Calgary Folk Festival, Sled Island, Afrikadey and more! You can still catch our last programmed act, Sinistro, on Sunday, July 15 at 2:30pm.

If you’ve already been by to see NMC at the Stampede – thanks! If not, swing by to say hello, and Happy Stampeding!
