Preview: International Jazz Day arrives at NMC April 30

April 30 marks the 2nd annual United Nations' International Jazz Day and Calgary is celebrating with a city-wide jazz partyThanks to the generous support of UNESCO and the Music Performance Fund, JazzYYC, in cooperation with the National Music Centre, EPCOR CENTRE and CADME, is offering free jazz events around the city from noon ‘til night.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day to showcase the role of jazz, the most democratic of musical genres, in uniting people in all corners of the globe. Born in America, rooted in African traditions and drawing on European musical forms, jazz is now enjoyed around the world and evolves in each new country where it takes root.

In our global village, International Jazz Day raises awareness of the need for mutual understanding and cooperation. Jazz exemplifies this by respecting its heritage while always moving forward, promoting freedom of expression, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for the contribution of each individual. Jazz beautifully expresses the rich diversity and innovative energy of our modern Canadian society and the youthful drive of Calgary.

International Jazz Day brings together jazz musicians and enthusiasts around the world on one day to celebrate and learn about jazz, its roots and its future. Istanbul, Turkey has been named the 2013 Global Host City for International Jazz Day.  Cities across the globe are participating with their own Jazz Day programs. You can see all of the planned activities, including Calgary’s, at www.jazzday.com.

So come out on Jazz Day and have some fun! Events kick off with lunch hour concerts around the city and a lunchtime introduction to jazz at EPCOR CENTRE. Jazz Day continues with a free jazz concert at the National Music Centre from 7-10 PM. More venues will be announced soon, so stay tuned to the JazzYYC website and free weekly newsletter for updates. If you can’t make it out, you can go to the JazzYYC website for Jazz Day links and a special live steamed Jazz Day performance from Istanbul.
