Calgary hip-hop tour de force Sinzere is sharing the video for “Active,” an anthem of resilience, off her latest EP, Highkey.
The video shows Sinzere in the role of a boxer preparing for the fight of her life: her versus herself. What follows is a gruesome fight for peace. After being knocked out in the ring, she’s seen training and eventually fighting again, getting back on her feet when she’s battered, bruised, and broken. It’s a potent metaphor for what Sinzere has called her “survivor’s tale.”
A press release describes the track as “a testimony of some of the highs and lows in Sinzere’s life.” In particular, almost “losing her life in the middle of a shoot-out at an event she threw,” and “coming to grips with her lifestyle at the time.”
“I was in a dark place and used that darkness to transcend the pain I was feeling,” Sinzere said. “Through this intense sense of awareness and healing, Highkey was born.”
Sinzere’s three-track EP, Highkey, was recorded during the National Music Centre’s 2020 concert, recording, and mentorship series, which was sponsored by RBC and supported several artists affected by COVID-19.
